If you use your weighing equipment for any of the below activities, your equipment may need to be verified for trade use:

  • Weighing products for commercial transactions.
  • Calculating fees, taxes, penalties, or other payments based on weight.
  • Compliance with laws or regulations, including providing expert opinions in legal proceedings.
  • Preparing prescription medicines in pharmacies and conducting weight analyses in medical and pharmaceutical labs.
  • Pricing items based on weight for direct sales to the public and pre-packaging purposes.

We can assist you in complying with your Legal for Trade requirements with verification and re-verification of weighing equipment.

Understanding “Legal for Trade”.

“Legal for Trade” also known as Stamping or Self-Verification signifies a crucial requirement for businesses involved in commercial transactions based on weight. The Legal for Trade process ensures that weighing equipment has undergone rigorous testing to meet accuracy and suitability standards.

Initially, when purchasing trade-approved equipment, it must undergo verification to confirm compatibility and compliance with trade standards. This process ensures that all components are suitable for trade use and that the equipment meets specified accuracy tolerances.

Any alterations or repairs that may impact weighing performance or compromise the equipment’s integrity require re-verification.

Types of verification.

Initial verification

This happens when a weighing scale or unit is first put into service. Initial verifications are carried out by the manufacturer or an approved verifier, Stevens Traceability.

Re-Verification

Subsequent verifications may take place for the following reasons:

  • A Weights and Measures Inspector checks the scale and finds it fails one or more tests.
  • A fault occurs on the scale, requiring the original seal to be broken to enable it to be repaired.

In these instances, the scales must be re-verified and sealed before being returned to service.
