In food manufacturing, choosing industrial weighing equipment for your business and knowing which equipment would be best suited to your processes and products can be a challenge.
This blog explains what equipment options are available to you to adhere to average weight legislation – the Weights and Measures Regulations (2006)
Types of Average Weight Systems
If you need to adhere to average weight legislation, you generally have two main options when purchasing a system; one is a static average weight scale and the other is a dynamic checkweigher, we explain the differences below.
Static Average Weight System
A static average weight system boasts a scale that comprises no moving conveyors. Static average weight systems will only weigh a small number of sampled products from your production line to determine a batch average weight.
A static average weight system is usually preferable for smaller businesses with a lower throughput of products on the line because you will be weighing products yourself on the scale through sampling.

Dynamic Checkweigher
A dynamic Checkweigher is a machine that will weigh all of your products on the production line. Conveyors will move the product onto a weigh deck, then the checkweigher will decide whether the product is an acceptable weight or not. If your product isn’t accepted, then it will be rejected from the production line through a desired reject method such as air blast or push reject.
A dynamic checkweigher is more suited to larger businesses with a high throughput of products, who are seeking complete product coverage with no T2 samples at all. Dynamic checkweighers weigh every product automatically via a conveyor, so very little operator interaction is required.
